Supreme Court Clerkships

Welcome. This page contains information about, and availability of, judicial clerkships with the Washington State Supreme Court, located in Olympia, Washington. The Court strives to keep this information timely, but cannot guarantee that positions listed as available are still available. You can view biographies of the justices by clicking on the name of the justice.

Law clerks typically serve one or two year terms; however, law clerkships are at-will. The Court or the law clerk can terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause or advance notice.

Salary and Benefits

Effective April 2023 the annual starting salary for a Supreme Court Law Clerk is $88,416 ($7,368 per month). Contingent upon continued funding, a five percent adjustment will occur automatically in years 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Applying for a Clerkship

The Court has no official deadline for judicial clerkship applications. Many of the justices interview potential judicial law clerks in the winter or early spring, so the Court advises applicants to submit their application packages as early as feasible. For more specific information about a justice's application deadline, please contact that individual justice's chambers.

To apply for a judicial clerkship with one of the justices, you must send the following to each justice to whom you are applying:

  • Cover letter.
  • Resume.
  • Self-edited writing sample.
  • Unofficial law school transcript.
  • Three letters of recommendation. The person writing the letter of recommendation may send it directly to the justice.
