Supreme Court Inauguration Ceremony Monday

SUPREME COURT INAUGURATION CEREMONY MONDAY

FOR NEW MEMBER, RE-ELECTED JUSTICES AND THE

LONGEST-SERVING CHIEF JUSTICE IN STATE HISTORY

OLYMPIA, WA--Newly-elected Justice Jim Johnson will be sworn into office on Monday, January 10, 2005 as the newest member of the Washington Supreme Court.  The inaugural ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Temple of Justice in Olympia.

The ceremony will also mark the departure of Justice Faith Ireland, who is retiring from the Court, and the oath of office for Justice Barbara Madsen and Justice Richard Sanders who will be sworn to additional six-year terms on the Court, following re-election to their respective positions.

Gerry Alexander will also be sworn in as the longest-serving Chief Justice in Washington State history.  Alexander is the state Supreme Court’s 52nd chief justice, recently elected unanimously by his fellow justices to a second four-year term.  He will present his State of the Judiciary Address a joint meeting of the Washington State Legislature on January 18th at noon.
