Gender specific assessments and treatments are needed and the commission is currently exploring solutions and supporting the work of the Justice for Girls Coalition of Washington State, which focuses on justice involving girls. In addition, we are working to develop educational programs for judicial officers to enhance their understanding of the issues presented by justice-involved girls.
HB2747 - a bill restricting use of restraints on pregnant women and youth was researched, drafted, supported and passed with the involvement of select members of the commission, members of the Seattle University Women's Law Caucus, and Legal Voice. HB 2747 was sponsored by the Honorable Jeannie Darneille and the Honorable Karen Fraser. This law prevents the shackling of incarcerated pregnant women during transport and delivery.
