Jury Service

On June 18, 2020, the Washington State Supreme Court issued an order allowing state trial courts to resume jury trials as of July 6, 2020, providing that courts observe "the most protective applicable public health guidance in their jurisdiction."

The new order provides direction on specific steps involved in empaneling juries, following the recommendations of a statewide jury trials workgroup and the state Department of Health (DOH).

Jury trials were first suspended by a previous order of the court on March 20 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a declaration of emergency by Governor Jay Inslee. The suspension of jury trials was then extended twice as the public health emergency continued to be studied and addressed.

With the exception of new jury trials, Washington courts have been operating throughout the pandemic. Courts are processing cases and conducting as many proceedings as possible through remote measures — by email, telephone conference, video appearances and through remote platforms such as Zoom and WebEx.

Throughout this public health crisis, Washington's judicial branch has continued to work with partners at the national, state, county and city levels to take appropriate measures to ensure you stay healthy and safe in visiting courthouses throughout our state. An example of steps being taken can be found at the videos on this site courtesy of Pierce County Superior Court.

Please visit your local courthouse website for further information on current operation status and answers to any questions regarding your local jury summons.

Thank you for your willingness to serve!
