April 09, 2024

Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University will host the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division I when a panel of appellate judges hears oral arguments during a community visit to Whatcom County on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The court proceedings are open to the public and attendees are welcome to learn more about the role and operations of the Court of Appeals during a Q&A session directly following oral argument.

The hearings will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Fairhaven Auditorium located just east of South College Drive on the south end of the Western Washington University campus in Bellingham, WA. Proceedings will be recorded and livestreamed by TVW.

“We are delighted to continue our traveling court program through this collaboration with Fairhaven College and the Center for Law, Diversity and Justice,” said Division I Acting Chief Judge Cecily C. Hazelrigg, a Fairhaven alumni and former adjunct instructor. “The ability for practicing and aspiring legal professionals to see live oral argument and ask questions of the panel in a campus setting is somewhat unusual and incredibly valuable from an educational perspective. We look forward to visiting with students, and members of the local bar and judiciary, during this visit to the northern part of our region.”

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., Judge Stephen J. Dwyer, Acting Chief Judge Cecily C. Hazelrigg and Judge Bill A Bowman will hear arguments in the following cases:

•    852086 – Steven Beard v. The Everett Clinic PLLC, et al.
•    843524 – State of Washington v. Mical Roberts
•    854666 – Brenda Welch v. Pemco Mutual Insurance Company

Each argument will last approximately 20 minutes. Briefs and other filings in these cases can be found at Washington State Courts - Appellate Court Briefs.

Division I of the Court of Appeals is located in Seattle, WA and covers the region including King, Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, San Juan and Island Counties. However, all three divisions of the court hear appeals from trial courts throughout the state.

Further information on the history, members and operations of the three divisions of the Washington Court of Appeals is available at Washington State Courts - Appellate and Trial Courts.
