STATE OF WASHINGTON
ETHICS ADVISORY COMMITTEE
OPINION NO. 91-22

Question
May a judge solicit fellow members of the judiciary for a campaign
contribution to a third judge's contested judicial election campaign fund?
May a judge solicit members of the public for contributions to another
judge's contested judicial election campaign fund?

Answer
CJC Canon 7(A) allows a judge to solicit fellow members of the
judiciary for a campaign contribution to a third judge's contested judicial
election campaign fund.
A judge may not solicit members of the public for contributions to
another judge's contested judicial election campaign fund as that
solicitation would give the appearance that the soliciting judge is using
the prestige of the judicial office to advance the private interests of
others.
