STATE OF WASHINGTON
ETHICS ADVISORY COMMITTEE
OPINION NO. 92-6

Question
May a judicial officer solicit funds from other judicial officers to
promote the bond issue campaign to construct a new juvenile justice center?

Answer
CJC Canon 7(A)(1)(c) provides in part that a judicial officer or
candidate for election to judicial office should not solicit funds for or
pay an assessment or make a contribution to a political organization or
nonjudicial candidate. Therefore, a judicial officer may not solicit funds
from other judicial officers to promote the bond issue for a new juvenile
justice center.

Comment
This situation is different from the question raised in Opinion 91-22.
That situation addressed solicitation by judges of other judges for a third
judge's campaign. That activity is permitted by CJC Canon 7(A)(1)(c)
because the prohibition against solicitation of funds does not apply to a
judicial candidate.
