Survey results and diversity impacts to be examined OLYMPIA — State Supreme Court justices on May 24, 2017 will hear results of a year-long jury demographic survey project, conducted in numerous Washington counties, during a symposium that will explore the racial and ethnic makeup of jury pools, whether jury pools in Washington are reflective their communities, and how this question impacts the delivery of justice The symposium, “Jury Diversity in Washington: A Hollow Promise or Hopeful Future?,” is presented by the Washington State Minority & Justice Commission with support from Washington Appleseed and Prolumina. The presentation is open to the public and is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, May 24th, at the Temple of Justice on the Capitol Campus in Olympia. It will also be filmed by TVW and be available for viewing live at www.tvw.org. “The Symposium is an extraordinary opportunity to take the conversation about jury diversity one step deeper,” said Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, co-chair of the Minority and Justice Commission. “We hope to learn more about who shows up, how a jury source list is compiled, and why it all matters.” Professor Nina Chernoff of the City University of New York School of Law will serve as keynote speaker of the symposium, which will also feature information on an innovative program in Pierce County to increase jury diversity. The Washington State Minority & Justice Commission was established by the state Supreme Court in 1990 to determine whether racial and ethnic bias exists in the courts of Washington and to take creative steps to overcome and prevent it. The Commission grew out of a task force established in 1988 at the urging of state legislators.
