Washington Courts: Press Release Detail

Supreme Court Chief Justice to deliver State of the Judiciary Address Friday

January 12, 2009

Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander will deliver the 2009 State of the Judiciary Address before a joint session of the Washington State Legislature on Friday, January 16 at 11:30 a.m.

Detailing reform efforts of Washington’s trial courts, public defense and civil legal services, the Chief Justice will also discuss steps taken by the judicial branch of government to reduce costs in light of the state’s budget deficit.

Alexander is the Supreme Court’s 54th chief justice, the longest-serving chief justice in state history. He was elected to the Court in 1994 after serving for more than two decades as a superior court judge in Thurston and Mason Counties and on the state Court of Appeals, Division Two.

As Chief Justice, Alexander leads a constitutionally separate, independent and co-equal branch of government, the duty of which is to protect rights and liberties, uphold and interpret the law, and resolve disputes peacefully through the open and fair administration of criminal and civil justice throughout the state.

The address will be carried live via TVW, Washington’s Public Affairs Network.  Copies of his address will be available online at www.courts.wa.gov immediately following the event.
