Washington Courts: Press Release Detail

Washington judicial branch works to address bias, improve justice outcomes from start to finish

March 09, 2020

Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens released the 2020 State of the Judiciary report highlighting the achievements, challenges and work of the judicial branch over the past year.

In addition to the demanding daily work of Washington courts as they manage many thousands of criminal and civil cases, the state judicial branch in 2019 worked on recommendations for improving pretrial justice information and resources for courts; jury diversity and jury bias; the impacts of gender on justice processes and outcomes; improving civic learning resources in schools and communities; hosted community celebrations of family reunifications and adoption of foster children; launched new web pages focused on the Court of Appeals and court forms; advanced critical technology projects, and much more.

The work, achievements and challenges of Washington’s judicial branch are reflected in the 2020 State of the Judiciary written report presented to state lawmakers and state residents by Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens. The report was released today.

“Courts and judicial branch partners work diligently every day to deliver effective and timely justice, and to and address the complex challenges to providing equal and fair processes and outcomes,” said Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens. “This report provides a small glimpse into their efforts. I am proud share this report and to work with such dedicated public servants.”

The State of the Judiciary report is delivered by the chief justice each year to the other branches of government and Washington residents to provide an account of the work of the courts and the primary issues facing the judicial branch.

The Chief Justice is the lead spokesperson and administrative head of the judicial branch.
