Washington Courts: Press Release Detail

King County District Court Announces Reduced Operations from December 23, 2002 - January 3, 2003

December 13, 2002

To facilitate the permanent closures of the Renton and Federal Way Divisions, King County District Court will operate at a reduced schedule for a two-week period starting on December 23rd.

At least two divisions of the Court will be open for full service during the two-week period to minimize the inconvenience to the public.  A listing of the partial services per division can be found online at www.metrokc.gov/kcdc/closures.htm

The Court announced the permanent closure of the Renton and Federal Way Divisions in October in response to a $4.1 million budget cut for fiscal years 2002 and 2003, and a vote by the King County Council to consolidate King County’s current judicial districts effective January 1, 2003.

As a part of these budget reductions, nearly 70 staff out of 290 positions were also lost through terminations and hiring freezes.

The Federal Way and Renton District Courts will both officially close their doors on December 20, 2002.
