King County Superior Court Judge Deborah Fleck is the new president of the State Superior Court Judges’ Association (SCJA). During her tenure, Fleck will focus on adequate funding for the courts; correcting racial disproportionality in the application of drug laws; development of best practices to efficiently provide quality resolution of cases; and increased public education about the justice system. “I am extremely honored to be elected to this position, and look forward to working with the association to improve the operations and accessibility of our courts,” said Judge Fleck. Seen as a voice in public policy, the association also advises of the cost and consequences of various public policy initiatives that impact the work of superior courts throughout the state. Fleck has served on the superior court bench since 1992. Currently the Chief Judge at the King County Superior Court’s Regional Justice Center, she has also chaired numerous committees aimed at improving operations of the courts in relation to family and juvenile issues as well as race and justice issues. She was honored as the 1999 Jurist of the Year by the Family Law Section of the Washington State Bar Association, and as Judge of the Year in 2000 by the Washington State Trial Lawyers’ Association. The SCJA president and board of trustees represent the 175 judges of Washington’s county-level superior courts. Created by state statute, the association provides its members with continuing judicial education, recommends changes to civil and criminal court rules, and promotes improvement in the administration of justice.
