The challenges of reentry after incarceration: Supreme Court symposium on May 28 explores groundbreaking research, options

May 22, 2015

The Washington State Minority and Justice Commission and the Seattle University School of Law invite the public to a Supreme Court Symposium looking at the barriers individuals face when reentering society after serving time in jail or prison. The symposium is set for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the Temple of Justice in Olympia.

Reentry: Do We Really Care About People Succeeding After Prison?,” will also be live-streamed by TVW on its web page and will be available for viewing at www.tvw.org.

The symposium will explore the serious challenges faced by those who are trying to rebuild their lives after incarceration. These challenges include basic human needs such as finding stable housing, employment, reuniting with family members, dealing with court-ordered financial obligations and more.

The results of a groundbreaking study in Boston, which followed former prisoners as they tried to navigate back into society, will be shared along with a breakdown of what some of those challenges look like here in Washington State. The Symposium will highlight current efforts in our state that are aimed at helping individuals successfully integrate back into their communities.

“We all have been looking at the problem of mass incarceration, which is vitally important. However, we also have to look at the challenges and barriers individuals face when they leave prison or jail,” said Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, co-chair of the Minority and Justice Commission.

“When they leave incarceration, they ought to be able to return to their families and communities empowered, with the ability to be independent and self-sufficient,” Yu said. “Our Symposium will explore the systemic practices and polices which actually create barriers and limit the ability of these individuals to get jobs and to reintegrate into society.”

Because space is limited in the Temple of Justice courtroom, advance registration by attendees is requested. Please contact Cynthia Delostrinos at Cynthia.delostrinos@courts.wa.gov, or at (360) 705-5327.
