Consanguinity, Lineal

Lineal consanguinity, or the direct line of consanguinity, is the relationship between persons, one of which is a descendant of the other. The direct line is divided into a direct line descending, which connects a person with those from whom he descends. In the direct line there are as many degrees as there are generations. Thus, the child is, with regard to the parent, in the first degree; the grandchild with regard to the grandparent, in the second; and vice versa as to the parent and grandparent with regard to their respective children and grandchildren.
