Part-Time Judges – Political Activities – Lesson Review

  • Opinion 85-8 details that it is not proper for a part-time judge to continue in that position while a candidate for a school board position even though that said position is in a school district outside the municipality in which the judge sits.
  • Part-time judges must comply with provisions of the CJC Canon 7 (A).

  • CJC Canon 7 (A) (1) (b) prohibits a judicial officer from publicly endorsing a non-judicial candidate for public office. (Opinion 93-9)
  • CJC Canon 7 (A) (2) states that judicial officers shall not identify themselves as members of a political party and that they may not contribute to a political party.
  • CJC Canon 7 (A) (4) states that judges must resign from office when they become a candidate for any non-judicial office. (Opinion 85-8)
