Member Biography

Judge Anthony David Gipe

Anthony David Gipe started a practice in law after a short career as an intelligence analyst and interpreter for the U.S. Navy. In practice, Anthony focused on complex civil litigation, criminal defense, civil rights, and family law in Oregon, Washington, and California. Anthony handled nearly 100 trials in state and federal courts and also served as a pro tem judge and arbiter in local courts handling trials and motion calendars.

Anthony became an advocate for LGBT issues in the legal profession, in business, family law, civil rights, and related issues in Oregon, Washington and California as an advisor and as trial counsel.

Anthony was the Co-Founder and Director of International Families Justice Coalition (IFJC) a non-profit legal services firm funded by the State Legislature and supervised by the state Office of Civil Legal Aid. IFJC's focus is the specific issues facing immigrant and non-English speaking participants in family law cases. The founder and volunteers of IFJC are all multi-lingual attorney’s providing services to immigrant communities.

In 2019, Anthony was appointed to serve as a full time judge at Kent Municipal Court.

Anthony devotes significant time to volunteering in the profession. During his tenure as an attorney, he was a founding board member and/or faculty of the Washington State Bar Association Leadership Institute Advisory Board from its inception through 2018. He was also a founding board member of QLAW and two other minority/specialty bar associations. Finally, Anthony served the Washington State Bar Association for fifteen years as a committee chair, as an At Large Governor, and as President of the WSBA in 2013-2016.

Anthony is currently a member of the Washington Supreme Court Minority & Justice Commission, the District & Municipal Judge’s Association, and the Artist’s Trust. He also continues to provide legal education for judges and lawyers for IFJC, though he is no longer a director and board member of IFJC. Anthony gives presentations on Art & Social Justice as well art and creative practices as a benefit to quality of life.

Anthony has degrees and credentials in linguistics, Russian language, art, and comparative history, in addition to his Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law. When Anthony is not practicing law, he pursues his passion for fine arts and painting.
