Civic & Charitable – Fundraising Activities – Lesson Review

  • Judges may not use the prestige of judicial office to raise funds for an organization. This is prohibited by CJC Canon 5(B)(2). (Opinion 86-18)
  • Judges may participate in fundraising activity that is not using the prestige of the judicial office to raise money for an organization. (CJC Canon 5(B)(2))
  • Judges may waive the fee for performing marriages but they may not designate that a donation be made to a specific charitable organization. (Opinion 97-3)
  • When imposing a sanction on a lawyer, a judge may give the lawyer the option of making the contribution to a local charity selected by the lawyer. The judge may not designate the charity and the judge should advise the lawyer that the contribution should not be made to an organization which has a political agenda involving the legal system. (Opinion 99-10)
