Office of Reporter of DecisionsThe Office of the Reporter of Decisions prepares the decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for publication in the official court reports. The Reporter of Decisions is a constitutional officer of the Supreme Court as provided by Article IV, section 18 of the Washington State Constitution. From 1854 to 1889, opinions of the territorial Supreme Court were published in the three volumes of the Washington Territory Reports. From 1889 to 1939, opinions of the Supreme Court were published in the Washington Reports; from 1939 to the present, opinions are published in the Washington Reports, 2d Series. Opinions of the Court of Appeals are published in the Washington Appellate Reports. Slip opinions filed recently are available on the Internet through the home page for the Washington State Courts. Under the direction of the Supreme Court, the Reporter's Office publishes a style sheet for use in preparation of opinions for publication. The style sheet is available on the Internet through the home page for the Washington State Courts. In 1995, the publication, sale, and distribution functions of the official court reports was first contracted out to a private publishing company. In 2000, 2007, and 2014, the publishing contract was awarded to Matthew Bender & Company, Inc. (LexisNexis). The Reporter's Office oversees the contract with LexisNexis and assists the courts in preparation of opinions for publication. The Commission on Supreme Court Reports is an advisory body to the Supreme Court for matters relating to the publication of the court reports.
