Division II Externships

Welcome. This page contains information about, and availability of, judicial externships with Division II of the Washington State Court of Appeals, located in Tacoma, Washington. The Court strives to keep this information timely, but cannot guarantee its accuracy. You can view biographies of the judges and commissioners of the Court by clicking on the name of the judge or commissioner in the table below.

All three divisions of the Washington Court of Appeals offer volunteer judicial externships for law students. Judicial officers intend externships to be educational. Volunteer externs will gain insight into appellate practice and procedure, as well as the internal workings of the Court of Appeals. Externships may be full or part time. Volunteer externs serve at the pleasure of the judicial officer who selected them, so assignments vary.

Subject to availability of funds, the Court of Appeals offers stipends to volunteer externs to help defray transportation, housing, and other costs in the following amounts:

• The extern has engaged in externship activities at least 70 hours in a 12-month period: $750
• The extern has engaged in externship activities at least 200 hours in a 12-month period: $1,500
• The extern has engaged in externship activities at least 400 hours in a 12-month period: $3,000

Amounts will not be prorated. Depending on their law school's policy, volunteer externs may receive both academic credit and a court of appeals stipend. The court will award the stipend if the volunteer extern meets minimum requirements, even if the volunteer extern is receiving other grants or stipends.

Applications should be submitted using the "Send documents" link for the appropriate Judge or commissioners. Please submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and a list of 3 references. Unless otherwise stated, applications will be accepted from law students starting with the 1L summer.
