State Legislation

The Council on Public Legal Education, along with others, was instrumental in getting legislation signed into law in March 2018. The legislation includes a ground-breaking new requirement for a stand-alone civics class in high school. It provides funding for teacher professional development in civics and adds an emphasis on History Day to OSPI's responsibilities.

Finally, at the request of CPLE, the legislation provides for demonstration projects addressing the stark inequities existing in current access to effective civics education for youth of color, rural youth, and youth from disadvantaged economic backgrounds.
