Artist's Profile*

Richard Hashagen, the Northwest Artist, is a native of Spokane, Washington. His interest in artwork began in elementary school, at the seventh grade level. It has spanned 49 years. 1930's night school and high school were contributing factors in developing a lifetime of visual art presentation and appreciation.

During a stint of Naval service (World War II), his geographical station allowed the study of different art media at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois and Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana.

After World War II, Richard took formal art classes under the direction of Dan Evans at San Diego City College. Following this formal training he opened his own studio in San Diego. During the 1960's he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana and opened his own studio, continuing his adversiting artwork and illustration. He was also an instructor of Graphic Design and Application at the Indianapolis Campus of the University of Indiana.

Though most of his adult years have been spent away from Spokane, Richard has maintainted a studio in the Spokane Valley since 1973.

In 1977, he set a goal to illustrate, in pen and ink, scenes of his native Northwest. The nucleus of this project was the County Courthouses, because of the significant relationship each person will have in his lifetime within the bounds of a County Courthouse. Also, most of our County Courthouses have local and regional historic significance. Branching out from this base, other historical points of interest have been added in most of Washington's 39 counties. A portion of this illustrative effort is included on the pages of this book...a viewing glimpse of our past.
