2. CASES WITH PRO SE LITIGANT(S)

Pro se litigants (i.e., those that represent themselves without an attorney) place an additional workload on judicial and clerical resources because of their limited familiarity with legal issues and the court environment. This statistical reporting category is included to provide a better assessment of the impact of these cases on the estimation of needed staffing resources.

To accurately record a pro se litigant case, enter the appropriate pro se connection code on the SCOMIS names screen. A case involving a pro se litigant will only be counted once no matter how many pro se parties are identified by connection codes.

Note: For inquiry and purposes of a thorough legal record, it is encouraged that the party’s name be input with the pro se connection code. However, the statistical count is drawn solely from the connection code, regardless of whether any name (or other text) is associated with a code. To ensure accurate counts of cases involving pro se litigants, input a pro se connection code for each pro se party, even if you choose not to enter the party’s name in the field adjacent to the connection code.

A pro se litigant case is categorized into the original offense filing category under which it is initially classified, and is counted during the month in which the case is filed.
