Courts extend debt reduction/relicensing program into June

May 21, 2009

Citizens throughout Washington have limited time remaining on a program designed to help those struggling to pay outstanding traffic tickets and fines.

In an effort to help citizens regain their driving licenses and reduce debt owed to collection agencies for unpaid fines and fees, 110 district and municipal courts in Washington State participated in a “Debt Reduction Program” throughout the month of May.

A limited number of participating courts (full list below) have now agreed to extend the program into June. Those with outstanding tickets or court fines should contact the court where their fine originated.

Once tickets are paid in full and reported to the court, the court will notify the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) to clear the driving record. The driver may be able to obtain a valid driver’s license 48 hours later if no other offense on the driving record prevents it.  Drivers can confirm their driving privilege is clear by visiting https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/dolprod/dsdDriverStatusDisplay/ and entering their driver license number.

Washington’s district and municipal courts held a similar program back in October of 2002, closing more than 10,000 cases and collecting $1,850,000 in revenue.
