Washington Courts: News and InformationTwo courts offering debt reduction program in MarchFebruary 15, 2013
In an effort to help citizens reduce debt owed to collection agencies and regain their driving privileges, two municipal courts in North King County and South Snohomish County are banding together to participate in a “Debt Reduction Program.” Lake Forest Park and Edmonds municipal courts are offering the two week program from March 4 - 15, 2012.
“Individuals who owe court debt will benefit in several ways,” said Lake Forest Park Municipal Court Administrator and program coordinator, Kelley Gradwohl. “In addition to saving money, this is an opportunity to clear up court debt and possibly reinstate their privilege to drive.”
Designed to help those with outstanding fines and suspended driver’s licenses, the courts and their collection agencies have agreed to waive a significant portion of collection costs. Those with unpaid collection debt should contact the court where their fine originated, who will direct payers to the appropriate collection agency. Clerks will also be able to provide the names of other courts where fines may be outstanding.
“The participating courts see this program as a collective enhanced customer service effort,” Gradwohl adds.
Once tickets are paid in full and reported to the corresponding court, the court will notify the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) to remove the hold against the driving record. The driver may be able to obtain a valid driver’s license immediately from a DOL office if no other offense on the record prevents it. Each court amnesty program could differ slightly.
Drivers can check the status of their license or ID card at http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/checkstatus.html?footer.
