Rick Neidhardt has been appointed to the position of Reporter of Decisions, effective February 4, 2013, by the Washington Supreme Court’s nine justices. Neidhardt replaces Danilo Anselmo, who left the office in 2011 to become the Deputy Reporter of Decisions for the United States Supreme Court. The Office of the Reporter of Decisions prepares the decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for publication in the official court reports. The Reporter of Decisions is a constitutional officer of the Supreme Court as provided by article IV, section 18 of the Washington State Constitution.
The position of Reporter of Decisions serves as what can be termed as Reporter for the Court, helping to review and edit the hundreds of opinions and orders that the Supreme Court issues each year. Neidhardt will serve as the 10th reporter in Washington State history.
“The Supreme Court is delighted that Rick has accepted this position,” said Chief Justice Barbara Madsen regarding the appointment. “Rick served as the Principal Legal Analyst for the Administrative Office of the Courts and has served the state’s judiciary extremely well for over two decades. We could not have asked for a higher qualified candidate to fill this important role.”
“I am deeply honored to have been selected to serve as the Reporter of Decisions and look forward to serving the Court and the people of the State of Washington,” said Neidhardt.
Neidhardt is a former law clerk for Chief Justice Barbara Madsen and for Justice Charles Johnson and has served as a legal analyst for the AOC since 1997. In addition, he was counsel for the Washington State House of Representatives’ Office of Program Research, and a former deputy prosecuting attorney for Thurston County.
He is a graduate of University of Michigan: J.D. received 1984 (cum laude); B.A. received 1980 (with honors). Neidhardt served on the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform and wrote a law review article that was cited by the United States Supreme Court.
