Detention Reporting

In 2016 HB 2449 was signed to provide court-based and school-based intervention and prevention efforts to promote attendance and reduce truancy. One requirement of the bill is for juvenile courts to transmit data to the AOC for accurate tracking of when courts order youth to a secure detention facility for violation of court orders related to truancy, at-risk youth, or child in need of services petitions. To fully understand the impact of the use of detention for non-offenders, and to make informed policy decisions, it is important to have accurate data on all youth in detention centers across the state, including the offender and the non-offender populations. Thus, the bill also requires AOC provide an annual statewide detention report to the Legislature, detailing how many youth spend time in detention, who the youth are, and the reason for their detention.
