In order to gain a better understanding of gender bias in the courts today, the Commission conducted the 2021 Gender Justice Study (2021 Study), a multi-year project working to determine the impact of gender bias on access to justice, focusing on the intersection of gender and race, poverty, and other identities.
The 2021 Study evaluates the status of the recommendations from the 1989 Study; presents updated data, research, and literature on 17 topic areas related to the justice system; highlights areas where data and research are lacking; and presents goals and recommendations for addressing inequities identified in the study. In addition, the Commission conducted five pilot projects to fill research and data gaps identified in the course of conducting the 2021 Study.
