State Law Library Rules of Conduct Policy

Court Building (all public access areas including Courtroom and Law Library)

  • Activities that disrupt the conduct of business in the building are prohibited.
  • Firearms and any object designed or suitable for lethal use are prohibited from being possessed in the building. This rule does not apply to law enforcement and court security personnel or to employees in the ordinary course of their duties.
  • Smoking in the court building, including within 25 feet of any entrance to the building, is prohibited.
  • Animals, other than service animals assisting persons with disabilities, are not permitted in public areas of the building.
  • Signs, displays, and posters may not be brought into the building except for exhibits or boards that are intended to be formally presented to the court by a party to a proceeding.
  • Children must be under the control of a responsible adult at all times.

Courtroom

  • No food or drinks are allowed, except water at the bench, counsel table, or the podium.
  • Cell phones and other devices must be silenced.
  • Spectators must act in a manner appropriate to the dignity and decorum of the courtroom, including observing court proceedings quietly.

Law Library

  • Library users must respect the need of others to use the library Research Room without disturbance, and treat library materials and equipment with care not to cause damage, loss, or misplacement of books or other materials.
  • Library users must comply with a staff request to reduce noise or conduct conversations in a separate room or outside the library.
  • Library users may not threaten or intimidate library staff or other users, create disturbances, or damage library materials, furnishings, or equipment.
  • Library users must follow the library’s Patron Computer Use policy.
  • Library users must take phone conversations outside and cell phones and other devices must be silenced in the Research Room.
  • No food or uncovered drinks are allowed.
  • Unauthorized materials may not be distributed in the library; soliciting and other commercial activities are not allowed.
  • Use of the library is limited to library related purposes (research, reading, copying, and meetings in appropriate rooms) and authorized areas only. Users must comply with a direction of library staff to cease or modify an inappropriate use.
  • No materials may be removed from the library unless they have been properly checked out.
  • Persons who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not permitted in the library.
  • Persons must comply with directives of library staff to cease conduct that violates these rules. Failing to comply with library rules or the directives of library staff may result in loss of library privileges or removal from the library, including a warning or trespass notice.
