WINGS
Working Interdisciplinary Network of Guardianship Stakeholders
WINGS is a statewide stakeholder group that provides opportunities for dedicated members of a decentralized court system to collaborate with each other
and a community of stakeholders to address Washington's future decision-support challenges, including:
- developing a comprehensive strategy to address service delivery to the elderly and persons with disabilities;
- promoting public awareness of abuse, neglect and exploitation;
- providing education to help families prepare for the time when loved ones will need decision-making assistance;
- educating professionals involved in caring for the elderly;
- increasing the availability of decisional support;
- implementing a no cost process to alert the courts and others of an individual's need for decision-making assistance;
- providing alternatives to guardianship which provide reasonable assurance that the needs of individuals are met;
- helping family guardians navigate the court system and perform guardianship duties;
- developing procedures to proactively monitor guardianships.
Project Goals and Objectives:
The Supreme Court formed WINGS to partner with community stakeholders in establishing and maintaining a stakeholder group. The ongoing stakeholder network has or will:
- identify strengths and weaknesses in the state's current approach to adult guardianship and less restrictive decision-making options;
- address key policy and practice issues;
- engage in outreach, education and training, such as training on supported decision-making; and
-
serve as an ongoing problem-solving mechanism to enhance the quality of care and quality of life of adults affected or potentially
affected by guardianship and other decision-making alternatives, and provide the support they need.
